About the Organization:
Amhi Amchya Arogyasathi (meaning "We for Our Health") is the outcome of the efforts of social activists from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, India, who started their journey with Tarun Shanti Sena. The not-for-profit organization works towards the betterment of women, Tribal communities, farmers and weaker sections of society through a community empowerment approach.

Formed in 1984 by Dr. Satish Gogulwar and Shubhada Deshmukh, the organization is inspired by Gandhian and Vinoba’s ideology of addressing health problems as part of the ‘wholeness of life’ and not merely administering medicines.

Issue:
During the pandemic, schools shifted to online classes, but many students lacked the necessary technology and network connectivity to participate. Teachers who were busy with patient awareness and tracking had little time or willingness to interact with children.

As a result, students simply moved up to the next grade without truly learning. In two tribal villages, Salhe and Padiyaljob, located in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, a survey was conducted revealing the following problems:

  • The mainstream education curriculum and textbooks have no cultural relevance to the tribal community.
  • The Marathi medium of teaching is difficult for children to understand and learn.
  • The education system lacks community involvement or mechanisms to introduce upcoming generations to their culture, resource politics, and history.
  • There is a need for space to discuss and debate social issues, gain exposure, build independent perspectives, and develop soft skills, confidence, articulation, and leadership.

Parents in both villages are anxious about their children's futures due to these challenges, and this is where Amhi Amchya Arogyasathi stepped in to make a necessary difference.

Action:
Implementing the Unique System of Ghotul Learning:

The Ghotul system of learning and transmission of traditional wisdom and culture is an important aspect of Gond culture. Our project aims to implement this system in 5 villages of Korchi block in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, which are largely tribal-populated and dependent on forest and agriculture for their livelihoods.

We will involve 150 school-going children and youth in the learning process through avenues such as drawing, painting, music, art, and games. Our project will create a balance between existing school curriculums and additional aspects of culture, home language, traditions, songs, beliefs, and resource-based knowledge.

Activities include Open Jeevan Shala (Gotul) Capacity building of School Management Committees & Gramsabha, Awareness among parents, Curriculum Design, Capacity building of volunteer teachers, establishing a Community Library, etc. Local governance will monitor and mentor the project with the help of School Management Committees, Gramsabha members, and our organization.

Impact :
Our goal is to improve the learning capacity of children in language and mathematics, ensuring that no child drops out of primary and secondary school in the target villages. To achieve this, we will develop a curriculum that blends the existing school curriculum with relevant local knowledge and skills.

Primary Cause :
Education for Tribal Children

Project Location(s):
